Active Learning
Definition
Active learning is any learning activity in which the student participates or interacts with the learning process, as opposed to passively taking in the information.
Why?
Active learning can produce better actual learning outcomes than a passive environment.
How to?
Do
- Use authentic tasks/projects to challenge and engage students.
- Making: produce artifacts or performance
- Support/scaffold students and provide feedback
- Use formative assessments early and often
- because students may not feel like learning in active learning (false perception of learning)
- Can use think-pair-share from guided discovery
- Encourage peer instruction (related: cooperative learning)
- Vary the type of activities to be inclusive
Do NOT
- Let students do tasks alone without guidance/scaffolding or feedback
